LegalInsights captures (subjective) insights on (1) The Fundamentals: domain expertise to be an effective tech & IP attorney for commercial transactions and product counseling (focused on commercial transactions and product counseling), (2) The Cutting Edge: developments in technology & law, particularly AI, Privacy, and Blockchain, and (3) some legal tech/ops tips to add more value to your clients. LegalInsights is not a substitute for lawyers (non-lawyers) to educate themselves about any area of the law. Rather, it provides its authors with a space to capture their (idiosyncratic) thoughts on some fascinating stuff.

The Fundamentals focus on (1) building blocks commercial & product counsel probably should be familiar with, including agreement provisions, considerations for various deal types, marketing, consumer protection & privacy laws, (2) tools such as checklists and playbooks, and (3) external resources that were helpful getting up to speed. Over time, building blocks and tools may develop into sample form agreements, and sample toolkits.

For The Cutting Edge, LegalInsights highlights interesting and overlapping trends in (1) Privacy (particularly U.S. and the EU) and to some extent its cybersecurity twin, (2) use of AI and corresponding legal developments (and to some changes in the legal profession), and (3) blockchain technology including increased acceptance of cryptocurrencies.

LegalInsights will publish once a week, and posts include examples found in the wild (e.g., agreements publicly disclosed to the SEC, online acceptance terms, examples of comparison advertising on products at the store).

About Me and Other Authors

I’m an in-house technology lawyer. After several years in big-law focusing on IP transactions in the M&A, strategic and commercial context, I found my passion by helping tech companies draft and negotiate strategic deals and bring new and innovative products to market. My goal is to provide clients pragmatic judgment and actionable appreciation of risks and challenges. I find (non-legal) alternatives to achieving business objectives. To that end, I love deep-diving into new technology (like AI) and legal subjects (nitpicking anti-assignment provisions, thinking about supply chain agreement must-haves, or creating scalable processes for engineering departments to comply with privacy laws). In an effort to keep my skills sharp after moving in-house (and do something with my newly-found spare time), I started making notes, checklists, and playbooks for myself. LegalInsights makes these public.

Over time, LegalInsights will include perspective by others in the legal profession, departments, and industry.
